A man who reportedly lured a woman away from El Camino Park in Palo Alto late Monday afternoon attempted to rob her and has been arrested, police reported Tuesday evening.
Sgt. Sandra Brown said a woman visiting from Taiwan was watching a soccer match at the park when a man struck up a conversation and offered to show her the area.
Brown said they walked south on El Camino Real and wound up near the back of the Palo Alto Medical Foundation near a secluded pedestrian walkway. He then grabbed her from behind and held some kind of weapon to her throat, Brown reported.
But the woman broke free and cried for help, triggering several 911 calls from the medical foundation.
Brown said the woman was able to describe the man to a police sketch artist and describe his vehicle. Police, aided by a license-plate number, received information from the Riverside County Sheriff's Deprtment that led investigators to the suspect's address in Redwood City.
At 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, police detained and interviewed Daniel Arturo Vazquez-Flores, 22, at the Palo Alto Police Department, where he was arrested for attempted robbery and assault with a deadly weapon. He was booked at the Santa Clara County Main Jail in San Jose.
