The possibility of a bomb in a backpack caused police to evacuate part of Cubberley Community Center at 4000 Middlefield Road in Palo Alto Wednesday afternoon.
A teacher overheard a student make "suspicious comments concerning weapons," Palo Alto Police Sgt. Sandra Brown said. The teacher went to the office to call police and when the teacher returned, the student had gone but the student's backpack was left behind.
Fearing the backpack might contain a bomb, police evacuated nearby classrooms for several hours until it was determined that there was no bomb.
The student is not being charged.
Palo Alto police and fire responded to the incident, along with police from Foothill-De Anza Community College District, which is responsible for the campus. In addition, the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Department Bomb Squad and an explosives-detection K-9 from Stanford police also responded.
