The Palo Alto Festival of the Arts kicked off in downtown Palo Alto Saturday morning. Thousands of people were on hand for the annual weekend event, which featured hundreds of artists, live music on three stages, wines and microbrews, kids' activities and Italian street painting.
But festival attendees were startled when a large tree fell onto the children's street artist play area on Tasso Street near Lytton Avenue Sunday.
A couple walking past the area was brushed by the tree's branches, but escaped with one person only receiving some scratches. The tree made a huge crash, and initial witness reports indicated someone may have been seriously hurt or killed.
The tree also fell across a chalk-art creation, according to Police Agent Dan Ryan. City crews cleaned the tree up quickly.
