Mysterious gas odor in Palo Alto

Fire department closes part of downtown

A mysterious gas-like odor prompted closure of a block of Hamilton Avenue in downtown Palo Alto shortly before noon today.

A half-hour search of the area between High and Emerson streets turned up no source.

"It's very unusual," Fire Department Battalion Chief Ron Bonfiglio said.

Several field and utility vehicles responded to the 11:26 a.m. phone report.
