Election 2000

Information for the November 7th Election

Although the tightest presidential race in decades has captured the attention of most voters, several local races and measures will be decided on Nov. 7 as well.

The race between Liz Kniss and Dolly Sandoval for Santa Clara County Supervisor has generated the most heat, with both candidates campaigning at a furious pace to win votes before Election Day.

Fifteen candidates are also vying for three seats on the East Palo Alto City Council, a race clouded by incumbent R.B. Jones' pending trial on bribery charges.

Voters will also decide the fate of one measure claiming to streamline Palo Alto's planning process and another calling for a parcel tax to fund flood protection.

Fresh off months of negotiations concerning Stanford's much-debated General Use Plan, County Supervisor Joe Simitian is running against Republican Deborah Wilder of Foster City and Green Party candidate Gloria Purcell for a seat on the state Assembly.

Other local races include contests for Ravenswood school district, the 11th state Senatorial District and the 14th federal Congressional District.

Analyses of these and the Menlo Park races, and profiles of the candidates, are presented here.
