Frequently asked transportation questions

How do I get to the San Francisco International Airport?

For $1, you can take the 7F SamTrans bus, which stops along El Camino Real including in front of Stanford Shopping Center, and get a ride right to the airport. For SamTrans information, call (800) 660-4287.
For $3 you can take CalTrain to the Millbrae station and then follow the signs to the free airport shuttle that is operated by the airport. The shuttles come regularly. Call (800) 660-4287 for more information.
Aside from public transportation, there are taxis, limousines and shuttles that will get you to the airport. Palo Alto's own Airport Service (650/216-8888) offers a variety of choices to get to the San Francisco airport. A private car costs $55; two-stop shared ride goes for $32; and to ride the multi-stop shuttle it will cost $19.
Super Shuttle (558-8500) offers door-to-door service for a cost of $23 for the first person and $8 for each additional person.
Expresso Limousine Service (421-6422) will charge $60.27 to transport up to four people to the San Francisco Airport. Airport Commuter limo services (876-1777) charges $39 to drive up to four people.


How do I get to the San Jose Airport?

Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (TA) bus line 22 runs from the Stanford Shopping Center to the Santa Clara CalTrain station, where people can transfer to line 10, the new Metro/Light Rail bus, which goes to the airport.
TA bus rides cost $1.10 for adults, and adult day passes are $2.20. For TA information, call (408) 321-2300.
Or take CalTrain to the Santa Clara station, at a cost of $1.75, and then board Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (TA) bus line 65 to the airport.
The same non-public transportation options apply here that do for the San Francisco airport.
Airport Service will whisk you from Palo Alto to the San Jose airport in a private car for $48; a two-stop shared ride for $25; or a multi-stop shuttle for $19.
Santa Clara Airporter (800-771-7794), for $15 plus $5 for each additional person, will shuttle you to the airport.


How do I get to Pacific Bell Park from the Palo Alto area?

Caltrain is the best way. go early and if the "SF Giants Special Train" comes alnong, get on it. Otherwise, just take one of the regularly scheduled trains. You can buy a ticket on the train if you are not able to purchase one in advance at a Caltrain station. The fare is $4 each way for adults, $2 each way for seniors and children (11 or younger), children 4 and under are free. "Peninsula Passes" are available for $30 from Caltrain stations.

You can also drive to BART. Take 280 North and take the John Daly Blvd. exit and follow the signs to the Colma BART station. Get off at the Montgomery Street Station in San Francisco and take the Shuttle at 2nd and Market Streets to Pac Bell Park. They run every 5 minutes prior to games and cost $1 each way.
You can drive and park. Parking is extremely scarce and expensive. Pac Bell Park does NOT recommend it. There are some spaces for the disabled, clearly marked, in the Giants parking lot at Pacific Bell Park with a free shuttle running every 20 minutes.

How do I get to 3Com (Candlestick) Park?

SamTrans offers special transportation options for football and baseball fans. People can board one of the designated buses at the downtown Palo Alto Caltrain depot, which will arrive at 3Com about a half hour before the game's start time and then depart approximately 20 minutes after its conclusion. The cost for baseball is $6 round-trip and for football is $10.

You can also take Caltrain to 3Com by getting off at the Bayshore station and then walking under a U.S. 101 overpass to the park. The walk is not that far, and you save the cost of parking. The cost of the train ride roundtrip from Palo Alto is $7.50.


How do I get to BART?

During the weekdays, the Dumbarton Express connects Palo Alto with the Union City Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) station. The shuttle picks up folks, Monday-Friday, at locations such as the downtown train station and the El Camino Real/Page Mill Road site. The cost is $1.75 each way and the last shuttle leaves Palo Alto at 7:08 p.m. Call: (800) 894-9908.
If you really want to get to the Daly City end of the BART track, you can pick up the 5L SamTrans out of Palo Alto, which connects to that BART station. The trip takes about 90 minutes. Call: (800) 660-4287.


How do I get to Great America?

Take Caltrain to the Mountain View station ($1.25), then take TA bus line 20 (for about a 28-minute trip) to the theme park. Or take Caltrain to the Sunnyvale station ($1.75) and then take TA line 55 (for about a 24-minute trip) to the park.


How do I get to San Jose Arena?

For a roundtrip price of $5.50, Palo Altans can get right to the action on Caltrain. Caltrain goes directly to the arena. Trains leave 15 minutes after the game is over. How do I get to Santa Cruz?

Take Caltrain from Palo Alto to the San Jose (Diridon) station and then transfer to one of the Amtrak connector buses. The cost is $5 one way for the journey over the hill, which takes about 45 minutes. The bus drops passengers off at the downtown Santa Cruz metro center. Call (800) USA-RAIL.
