UC Berkeley Extension

UC Berkeley Extension is the continuing education arm of the University of California, Berkeley. The Peninsula Center offers more than 300 classes per year, which include project management, personal financial planning, paralegal studies, accounting, marketing, management, and more. Personal enrichment courses are also offered in areas such as writing, humanities and wine studies. Other UC Berkeley Extension centers and classrooms are located in San Francisco, Berkeley and online.

Pets In Need

Wildlife Rescue
Cubberley Community Center, 4000 Middlefield Road, Bldg. V, Palo Alto. A nonprofit organization that focuses on rehabilitation of local wildlife and fostering public awareness, serving Palo Alto and surrounding communities. In 2007 WR merged with the Peninsula Humane Society. Wildlife Rescue provides care for animals in the shelter and staffs a wildlife hotline. Birds and animals must be brought to the shelter (there is no pick up service).

Gamble Garden Spring Tour
Specially selected local private gardens and the Elizabeth F. Gamble Garden are on show Fri, April 24 and Sat, April 25, 2009 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. During Spring Tour days, Gamble Garden also features exhibits, talks, lunch and gift boutiques. Mountain View Downtown Parade

National Rebuilding Day
Rebuilding Together Peninsula brings together thousands of volunteers on Sat April 25, to fix up homes and repair community facilities as part of a national effort to help low-income homeowners and neighbors. Tall Tree Awards
On April 16 at the Crowne Plaza Cabana, the annual Tall Tree Awards recognize exceptional civic contributions and service to the community by citizens, professionals businesses and nonprofit organizations in Palo Alto. Kings Mountain Archers

Advanced Acting Academy

California Youth Symphony

Palo Alto Children's Theatre

Ragazzi Boys Chorus

Kings Mountain Road
Beginning out of Woodside, Kings Mountain Road provides a good route to reach Skyline. The climb is 6.4 miles long with numerous switchbacks, and it tops out around the 2,000-foot level.

Old La Honda Road
This narrow, winding road is the easiest and most peaceful way to climb to Skyline or ride to the coast. Access is from Portola Road, less than a mile after it merges with Sand Hill Road. The climb is a 3.5-mile ascent of a narrow, winding road, climbing 1,700 feet. Descending the road is tricky, however, and not recommended. Take Hwy. 84 instead. Page Mill Road - Kings Mountain
By far the most strenuous climb around, Page Mill Road twists and turns 7 miles from the valley floor to Skyline Boulevard, where it tops out around 2,000 feet. This is a killer, especially on a hot day. From 1900 Park Blvd., Palo Alto, driving distance is 38.3 miles. Time: 2 hours, 47 minutes.

Shoreline at Mountain View
Mtn. View. Shoreline at Mountain View provides the biker with a fascinating environment to explore. This 700-acre sanctuary for wildlife and migratory birds, including endangered species, is interlaced with a network of 7 miles of paved pedestrian and biking trails at the north edge of the park. To the west, trails link up with the Palo Alto Baylands. On the east of Stevens Creek, visitors can travel to Crittenden Marsh (owned by Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District) and San Francisco Bay, which contains wildlife, native grasses and gravel paths. The Stevens Creek Trail provides users with multiple experiences through woodlands, tidal marshes and city neighborhood parks. A map of Palo Alto's bike routes is available at most libraries and at City Hall. The best-known of Palo Alto's routes is the Bryant Street Bike Boulevard, which runs from East Meadow Drive through downtown, where it connects with a bike bridge to Menlo Park. Occasional roadblocks discourage auto traffic on Bryant, which requires few stops for bicyclists.

Dumbarton Express
Administered by the Dumbarton Express Consortium and operated by AC Transit, the bus service travels through Palo Alto and Menlo Park crossing the Dumbarton Bridge and terminating at the Union City BART station. The DB and DB1 operate during non-holiday weekdays, Mon-Fri, only during commute hours. Service begins in Palo Alto at 6:23 a.m. starting from the Deer Creek area and terminating at the Union City BART. The last evening bus leaves the Palo Alto Caltrain station at 8:20 p.m. returning to Union City BART. During peak commute hours the service runs every 20-30 minutes. The adult transbay fare is $3.50 each way; senior, youth and disabled transbay fare is $1.70. The local adult fare is $1.75. Senior, youth and disabled fare is $.85. The Palo Alto Shuttle operates two routes: the Embarcadero shuttle and the Crosstown shuttle. Just hop on and take your bike aboard the northern-most cab car, marked with a yellow and black bike decal on the outside. Only 32 bikes per bike car (16 on Baby Bullets) allowed. Butano State Park

When it comes to pitching a tent, the options are few inside Palo Alto's city limits. But you don't need to head to the Sierra to rough it. Great spots are available within a 45-minute drive. Here are some of your best bets:

Foothills Park
3300 Page Mill Road, Palo Alto. Camp overnight at Towle Camp located east of the Interpretive Center in Wildhorse Valley. Available by reservation May 1-Oct. 31, the sites are for the use of Palo Alto residents and their accompanied guests only. $15 per campsite, Sun-Thu; $26 Fri-Sat; $26 per site for four or more campsites on any day. Single sites hold eight people, group sites can hold up to 16. One handicap drive-in site. No bikes on trails. No dogs on weekends and holidays. Monte Bello Open Space Preserve
Page Mill Road before Skyline Boulevard, in the Santa Cruz Mountains, above Los Altos Hills. The Backpack Camp on 2,800-foot Black Mountain is the only camping spot in the vast Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District. Monte Bello is located 7 miles west of I-280 on Page Mill Road. The camp is 2 miles from the Page Mill Road gate and parking lot. The camp has four sites that hold up to four people and one group site that holds up to 24 people. A permit is required.
