California Avenue, Palo Alto's "other" downtown, was the center of the town of Mayfield until Palo Alto annexed it in 1925. A supermarket, a large health food store, cafes, bars and numerous restaurants line this diverse, pedestrian-friendly shopping district. Easy access to Caltrain. In the evening, the busy Printers Inc. Bookstore and Cafe, which offers frequent readings by nationally and internationally known writers, is alive with caffeine-inspired conversation.
